Carmelo Anthony
In 2006, Carmelo averaged 26.5 points and 5 rebounds a game in his 3rd season with the Denver Nuggets. He shot a career high 49% from the field, 81% from the free-throw line, and finished 8th in the NBA in scoring, the highest mark for a Nuggets player in nearly 15 years. In March, he was named Western Conference Player of the Month, the first Nugget to receive this honor in nearly 20 years. He was also selected as a member of the 2006-2008 USA Men’s Senior Basketball Team.
In his first year in the NBA, Anthony set Nuggets rookie records for points, scoring average, and field goals made, while leading all NBA rookies in scoring. In Carmelo’s second season he averaged 21 points and 6 rebounds per game. In 2004, Carmelo was also selected to participate in the Olympic Games as a member of the USA Basketball Team.
Before coming to the NBA, Carmelo led Syracuse to a 30-5 record and its first National Championship in basketball. He was named MVP for the 2003 Final Four and East Regional and was selected as the Consensus national Freshman of the Year in college basketball.
On January 24, 2008, Anthony was named to his second consecutive NBA All-Star Game—his first as a starter. On February 8, Anthony scored a then career-high 49 points in a win over the Washington Wizards. During the Nuggets home win over the Dallas Mavericks, Anthony scored his 9,000th career point. He finished as the NBA's fourth-leading scorer with 25.7 points per game, and had career-highs in rebounds per game (7.4) and steals per game (1.3). He tied his career-high in blocks per game (0.5), and ended the season with 3.4 assists per game, which was the second-best mark of his career.
On December 10, 2008, in a home win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, Anthony tied for the most points scored in one quarter in NBA history by scoring 33 points in the third quarter. Anthony shot 12 of 15 (80%) in the third quarter and finished the game with 45 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. The Nuggets beat the Hornets in five games in the first round of the playoffs and have beaten the Dallas Mavericks 4-1 in the conference semifinals with Anthony scoring 30 points in a solid game 5 performance.
In the opening two games of the 2009–10 season, Anthony totaled 71 points, scoring 30 points in the home opener and 41 the next night. Anthony became one of five players in the Nuggets' history to open with 60 or more points through two games. In their third game, against the Memphis Grizzlies, Anthony scored a season-high 42 points, a game after his 41-point game against the Blazers. It was also the first time a Nugget scored back-to-back 40-point games. He was later named the NBA player of the week for these efforts. On November 27, Anthony scored a career-high 50 points in the Nuggets' win over the Knicks. Anthony was named as a starter for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game leading the West Conference ballots in votes for forwards. He would finish the season averaging 28.2 points per game.
The next season, Anthony would continue his great efforts leading the team in scoring with 25.2 points per game. But after the All-Star break he would soon be traded to the New York Knicks where he would then average 26.3 points per game and help the Knicks reach the playoffs. Anthony tied a playoff career-high with 42 points in the second game against the Celtics in the first round of the playoffs.
