John Calipari

John Calipari is a two-time Naismith National Coach of the Year recipient and the current head coach at the University of Kentucky. In his first year at UK, Calipari led the Wildcats to a 35-3 record, the school’s 44th Southeastern Conference regular season title, the SEC Tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight. Despite an NBA-record five Wildcats going in the first round of this year’s NBA Draft, Calipari will welcome to campus his second-consecutive No. 1 recruiting class for 2010.

Calipari began his coaching career at Kansas under Larry Brown, before serving as an assistant at Pittsburgh. At age 29, he was hired as head coach at UMass, where he turned the program into a nationally recognized team. After leading UMass to the Final Four in 1996, Calipari went on to coach the New Jersey Nets, which included a trip to the 1998 NBA Playoffs. After a year under Brown as an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers, Calipari returned to the college ranks. In nine years at Memphis, Calipari led the Tigers to six NCAA Tournaments, including an appearance in the 2008 NCAA Championship game. After four consecutive 30-win seasons, Calipari accepted the UK coaching position on March 31, 2009.

In January of 2011, UK earned its first No. 1 ranking since 2003, making Calipari the second coach in NCAA history to have led three different schools to a No. 1 ranking. Calipari has coached 17 eventual NBA Draft picks, including ten in the last three seasons. He also recently became the fifth coach to have coached two overall No. 1 NBA Draft selections (Derrick Rose, John Wall).  During the 2010-2011 season, he coached Kentucky to the SEC tournament championship.  The Wildcats ended up making their first final four since 1998 and finished the season at 29-9.  Also this past year, Coach Cal helped raise more than $1 million for Haiti.

Tayshaun Prince

Prince played for the University of Kentucky Wildcats from 1998 to 2002 and averaged 13.2 points and 5.7 rebounds a game. They posted a 97-39 record over the 4 years and advanced to the NCAA Tournament each year. Tayshaun was named to the All-SEC Teams in both his junior and senior year and was named the SEC Player of the Year in his junior season. UK won the SEC Tournament in 1999 and in 2001 and Prince was given the Most Valuable Player award in the 2001 tournament.
Prince was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the 2002 NBA Draft. In his rookie season, Prince was not in the regular playing rotation. However, due to the Piston’s struggle in the 2003 playoffs against the Magic he was added to the lineup and in turn became the only player in NBA history to score more points in the playoffs than in the regular season. In the ‘03-‘04 season Prince became the starting small forward for the Pistons after a coaching change. He increased his scoring average to 10.3 points per game and was selected to play for the Sophomores in the NBA Rookie Challenge. Prince continued to improve in the 2004-05 season, and was selected for the NBA’s All-Defensive Second Team and was a candidate for the Most Improved Player Award.
In August of 2007, Tayshaun was selected to be a part of Team USA that competed at the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship, a qualifying tournament for the Beijing Olympics. The team went undefeated and earned a spot in the 2008 Summer Olympics. Team USA hoped to win their first gold medal since the 2000 Summer Olympics and did exactly that. They won against the 2006 World Champion Spain in the final game and had gone unbeaten in the tournament altogether.  Through nine seasons with the Detroit Pistons, Prince has averaged 14.1 points per game and won an NBA title in 2003-2004.
