He would conclude his freshman season by tying the NCAA record for touchdown passes by a freshman with 29. His stellar sophomore season began with a bang by breaking two school records of 47 pass attempts and 32 completions in a single game against UCF. His season would be plagued by injury, but still managed to not miss a game and still throw 21 touchdown passes. The season was capped by a victory in the 2007 Holiday Bowl over 11thranked Arizona State where Colt was awarded the offensive-player MVP.
In 2008, Colt began the first 4 games of the season by completing 80% of his passes and compiling a quarterback rating of 209.71. It was in this time that he broke the Texas record for touchdown passes when 62 in his victory over Rice. Colt set the school record of 31 career victories in the rival blowout of Texas A&M, during which he completed his season with 3,594 passing yards, another Texas record. The season was finalized on January 5th, 2009 with a 24-21 victory over Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl where Colt was named Offensive Player of the Game.
In his senior season, Colt lead his team to a perfect regular season record of 12-0, and topped it off with a Big 12 Championship title over Nebraska in route to the BCS National Championship Game. By season’s end, Colt had established himself as the winningest quarterback in NCAA history with a superb total of 45 victories. He would also graduate as the only quarterback in NCAA football history to win at least ten games in 4 straight seasons. He would go on to receive numerous awards in 2009 including First Team All-American by the Associated Press, Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm (most outstanding senior quarterback), Davey O’Brien (nations best quarterback), Chic Harley (college football player of the year), Maxwell Award (best player in NCAA football), and finally was honored by having his #12 jersey retired from the University of Texas.
Colt played high school football at Jim Ned High School, a division 2A program in Tuscola, Texas. He was twice voted at the Associated Press 2A Offensive MVP and a First-Team All-State selection. He finished his career by completing 536 pass for 9,344 yards and 116 touchdowns. He stands on top of the list for all-time passing leader in Texas 2A history and 4th in state history.
