Neil Walker

Neil Walker was born September 10, 1985 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Walker, who is the son of former Major League pitcher Tom Walker, attended Pine-Richland High School and graduated playing the position of catcher. Walker grew up a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and when he decided against playing in college, the Pirates signed him to a contract. In 2007, after spending three seasons in their minor league system, Neil was the number three prospect in the Pirates’ organization, behind Andrew McCutcheon and Brad Lincoln. In that same year he was invited to spring training and was converted from a catcher to third base. After being sent to play with the Double-A Altoona Curve, Walker began showing off his hitting skills, compiling a four-hit game as well as a two-homerun game. At the end of the season, he was promoted to the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians, where he spent the 2008 and the majority of the 2009 season before being called up to the big leagues to play with the Pirates.

Debuting on September 1, 2009 as a pinch-hitter, he got his first major league hit five games later against Jason Motte of the St. Louis Cardinals. He made his first major league start in 2010 on May 25, and has remained at the major league level since then. He was again converted to another position, second base, in 2010 and has been the everyday second baseman for the Pirates ever since. His greatest feat of his career so far came later that same year when he put together an 18-game hitting streak from August 23-September 12, the longest hitting streak by a Pirates rookie since 1971. He was named the second baseman on Baseball America’s 2010 All-Rookie Team for his performance that year. He hit his first career grand slam in 2011 and finished with a .273 batting average with 12 homeruns and 83 RBIs. He entered 2012 with high hopes before dealing with various back issues that resulted in him being shut down for the season. Walker currently has a career .280 batting average to go along with 38 homeruns and 218 RBIs.
