Tom Crean

Tom Crean became the 28th Men’s Basketball coach at Indiana University on April 2, 2008.  Since coming to Indiana, he has hit the recruiting trail and has brought in a top 10 recruiting class in 2009, a top 15 class in 2011 and most recently a top 3 recruiting class in 2012.  Indiana has made strides under Coach Crean’s leadership and has posted their first top 25 wins over Illinois and Minnesota in the 2010-2011 season. In his 12 years of leading his teams as head coach, he is 218-162 and has seen all of his 36 seniors earn degrees from the university.

Coach Crean began his coaching career while attending Central Michigan in 1989 coaching at Alma College and Mount Pleasant High School.  His first Division 1 coaching position was under Jud Heathcote at Michigan State from 1989-90.  From there he became the associate head coach at Western Kentucky for four years which included a Sun Belt Championship and a trip to the Sweet 16.  After a brief stint at Pittsburgh for the 1994-95 season, Crean worked as the recruiting coordinator for Michigan State under Head Coach Tom Izzo and recruited the top talent in the state in Mateen Cleaves and Morris Peterson.

Prior to coming to Indiana, he averaged over 20 wins a season for the Golden Eagles of Marquette University.  He is a two-time recipient of the Ray Meyer Conference USA, NABC District XI and USBWA District V Coach of the Year awards.  In 2003, he was a finalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year Award, the same year he coached NBA Finals MVP Dwyane Wade to Marquette’s first conference Player of the Year award in 2003.

Closing out his fourth season as head coach of the Hoosiers,Tom Crean has solidified his position as the guy to put this legendary program back on top. This ESPN National Coach of the Year and SportingNews Big Ten Coach of the Year led Indiana (27-9) to its 6th winningest season in school history and a Sweet Sixteen berth. In the process of leading his team to a No. 7 national rank, Crean became the first IU coach to defeat three top 5 ranked teams and more impressively the only coach ever to defeat both the number 1 and 2 ranked teams in the same season. Coach Crean has once again brought in an ESPN rated top ten recruiting class as they look forward to another promising season being ranked the 2012-2013 preseason number 1 by USA Today, NBCSports.com, and ESPN.com.
