Tom Crean
Indiana head basketball coach Thomas Aaron Crean ws born March 25, 1966 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. He played four years of basketball at Mount Pleasant High School and, while a student at Central Michigan University, was an assistant coach at Mount Pleasant High School for five seasons. Tom graduated with a bachelor's degree in parks and recreation in 1989 and went to be a graduate assistant at Michigan State. In 1990 he went to Western Kentucky as associate head coach under Ralph Willard. When Willard left for Pittsburgh, Tom followed him and was associate head coach at Pittsburgh for a year. Crean returned to Michigan State as an assistant coach under Tom Izzo. Even though he wasn't on the staff, Crean received a 2000 National Championship ring since he had helped recruit and develop most of the players.
In 1999 Crean was named head coach at Marquette University. In nine years under Crean, Marquette went 190-96 (.664) making five NCAA Tournament appearances with the 2003 NCAA Tournament being special as Marquette reached the Final Four that year. While at Marquette Crean coached many current NBA stars such as Dwyane Wade and Steve Novak. In 2005 when Marquette left Conference USA for the Big East Conference many pointed to Crean's ties with then Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese. In 2008 Crean was hired as head coach of the Indiana University Hoosiers. After a struggling first three years trying to recover from recruiting violations from the previous coach, Indiana really took off in 2011. Crean became the first head coach to beat both the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the same season by beating then #1 Kentucky and then #2 Ohio State. With five highly-touted recruits joining them this year, Indiana is seen as one of the favorites to win the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Tom Crean's overall record is 267-174 (.605)
