What Parents Should Look For in a Youth Sports Camp

February 8, 2026 ProCamps Editorial

Not every camp is created equal. Here's a parent's guide to coach-to-camper ratios, safety, and the questions you should always ask before signing up.

With hundreds of youth sports camps available every summer, it's worth knowing what separates a great experience from a forgettable one.

Coach-to-Camper Ratio

Look for 1:12 or better. Anything higher and individual attention drops sharply.

Background Checks

Every coach and staff member should be background-checked. Don't be shy about asking — reputable organizations will gladly confirm.

A Real Curriculum

Ask for a sample daily schedule. If it's mostly scrimmages and "free play," your camper isn't going to learn much.

Inclusivity

Great camps welcome all skill levels and group campers thoughtfully so beginners aren't overwhelmed and advanced players aren't bored.

What's Actually Included

Camp jersey? Lunch? Photo with the athlete? Make sure pricing matches what you're getting.
